Bird Watching Tips For Nature Lovers

As winter transitions to spring, the warm weather brings with it a wonderful chance to watch the season’s birds in action. Whether you’re a diehard birdwatcher or just someone with a curiosity about avian life, here are tips to help you get the most of out of your bird watching adventure:

Pick up a Field Guide
Sure, you can just grab a pair of binoculars and head outside, but a some preparation beforehand can add immensely to the experience. The best way to know what you’re looking for is to spend some time with a field guide, which is a book with pictures of birds and tips for identifying them. National Geographic and Peterson make excellent field guides with region-specific information that will help you get to know the birds in your particular area.

Learn Where To Look
Don’t just take your binoculars and glance randomly around. If you really want to catch some exciting bird action, familiarize yourself with the habitats of the different birds you’re hoping to spot. When you’re hoping to see a certain kind of bird, make sure you know where to look – is it a species that likes to spend time in treetops, or on lake surfaces, or on the ground? A little pre-binocular reading can go a long way.

Recognize the Sounds
Your bird watching experience can benefit immensely if you gain a solid knowledge of the songs of different birds in your region. That way, you can recognize when you hear the sound of a particular bird and then you can figure out from there where to point your binoculars. There are many resources in libraries, bookstores, and online to help acquaint you with the sounds of birds in your region.

Write It All Down
To make your bird watching experience particularly engaging and memorable, consider keeping a diary of the outing. Record the birds you’ve spotted and the observations you’ve made about them in terms of their location, appearance, sound, and behavior. This will also prove helpful to you the next time you go bird watching because it can act as a guide to what you can expect to observe in a variety of bird species.

Try a Birding Trip
This is an especially great option for beginners. Many local nature preserves, parks, and Audubon chapters offer guided birding trips. Experienced bird watchers will lead you through prime birding areas in your region and acquaint you with the best methods of catching the birds in action. Taking a birding trip is also a great way to make friends with the same interest.

Whether you’re a frequent eater or new to the scene, Harrisburg's Sphinx of PA will serve you up dishes that will have you swooning. The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in the door is the staff's incredible friendliness! The owner and his daughter are almost always there, and they treat just about every diner like family. They’re happy to explain anything on Sphinx of PA's menu — and they're effusive about the wonders of Egyptian cuisine. Start out with some traditional Middle Eastern appetizers. The hummus is spectacular and the baba ghanoush is astoundingly rich and flavorful. When it’s time to move on to entrees, you can’t go wrong with the delicious beef shawarma. Falafel is an excellent vegetarian option. Sphinx's prices are exceptionally reasonable, with many entrees coming in under ten dollars.

When you’re delighting in superlative food, it’s super-delightful to know you’re also enjoying locally sourced ingredients.  At Bricco, you’re dining in the hands of award-winning masters—and their students—while supporting nearby farms and entrepreneurs. Bricco’s chefs Finch and Viscount received the 2010 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Culinary Arts. Bricco represents a collaboration between the Olewine School of Culinary Arts at Harrisburg Area Community College and Harrisburg Hotel Corporation, managing general partner of The Hilton Harrisburg.

Your menu selections pay glorious homage to the finest of Mediterranean cuisine. Seafood “towers” and “raw” offerings compete to steal the show from the beef and, yes, pizzas. And then how can you select from among additional entrees like roasted duck, short ribs and quail, or tapas options? Don’t miss some of the fabulous bottles from Pennsylvania vineyards or the diet-sabotaging desserts.  Guiltlessly indulge for lunch Monday through Friday and for dinner, seven days a week.  You’ll become a fan of Olewine’s and Ciao! Bakery, as well.

Five Out of the Ordinary Valentine’s Gift Ideas

January 31, 2012 by admin

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner; keep things fresh for your partner with these innovative ideas for Valentine’s surprises.

  1. Come up with some clues and lead your partner on a scavenger hunt around your home or around town. Leave smaller gifts, like notes professing your love, candy, or small trinkets, with some of the clues and save the main gift for the end.
  2. Skip the umpteenth bracelet or box of candy and instead give your beloved an experience. Go skydiving, take a weekend away, or simply give them a day where you take care of everything and they can do whatever they like.
  3. Get a local hotel room and take a trip to your own town. Eat out, visit local tourist attractions, and go shopping.
  4. Design a getaway just for your partner, but don’t let on where you are going or what you are doing til you get there.
  5. Try havng a date at home on Valentine’s Day and going out the night before or after. Restaurants are hectic and the servers are stressed on February 14. You may have a better experience if you stay in for a romantic dinner and movie on that day.
