Valentine’s Day is right around the corner; keep things fresh for your partner with these innovative ideas for Valentine’s surprises.

Come up with some clues and lead your partner on a scavenger hunt around your home or around town. Leave smaller gifts, like notes professing your love, candy, or small trinkets, with some of the clues and save the main gift for the end.

Skip the umpteenth bracelet or box of candy and instead give your beloved an experience. Go skydiving, take a weekend away, or simply give them a day where you take care of everything and they can do whatever they like.

Get a local hotel room and take a trip to your own town. Eat out, visit local tourist attractions, and go shopping.

Design a getaway just for your partner, but don’t let on where you are going or what you are doing til you get there.

Try havng a date at home on Valentine’s Day and going out the night before or after. Restaurants are hectic and the servers are stressed on February 14. You may have a better experience if you stay in for a romantic dinner and movie on that day.

Sure, ice cream is great on its own, but sometimes you need to add a little something more. If you’re getting sick of sprinkles, here are some suggestions for lesser-known ice cream toppings that will jazz up your dessert service:

Fruit is a great addition to any bowl of ice cream, both to add fiber and vitamins and also to make for more interesting flavors. One of my favorite additions are super-ripe fresh blueberries – they taste great with a little chill to them and go with just about any flavor of ice cream.

To add a little crunch to a bowl of ice cream, sprinkle with homemade or store-bought granola. Again, this is something that makes the bowl a little healthier in the long run – not that you should care, if you’re eating ice cream.

For a super decadent treat, drizzle a bowl of ice cream with caramel sauce and large-grained sea salt. The combination of sweet and savory flavors is absolutely unforgettable.

To add a Mexican flavor to your chocolate ice cream, make a hot fudge sauce and stir in a liberal dose of ground cinnamon. This vastly improves the flavor, making it richer and more complex.

Homemade whipped cream is much tastier and better for you than the pre-packaged supermarket variety, and it’s not really difficult to make. When you’re whipping the heavy cream, stir in a little cocoa powder for an extra treat.

Your eyes are important and overuse of them can lead to headaches, vision problems, and worse. Eyestrain is a common affliction when one stares at a computer screen all day, but thankfully there are many simple ways to prevent it. Here are some of our favorites:

For every hour of computer or screen time, take five minutes to perform eye exercises. One simple exercise involves walking to a window and placing your focus on a distant object. Without moving your head, trace the object’s outline with your eyes for one minute before moving on to a different object at a different distance.

Reduce glare as much as possible from your screens. Anti-glare coating on your monitors and glasses can help to mitigate the impact of glare, but the most important thing is to angle your monitor at 90 degrees from a light source.

Full spectrum lighting is much better for an eye-healthy environment. The best source of full-spectrum lighting is, of course, the sun, but artificial simulations are also available.

Adjust the contrast on your monitors to the optimum level, so there is a clean divider between colors. Increased contrast reduces the amount of focal work your eyes have to do, which strains them less.

There are a number of free apps such as Flux that will not only adjust the color warmth of your computer monitor throughout the day to reduce eyestrain but also remind you to take breaks.

There are a huge number of different diets out there, each one boasting unmatched weight-loss properties and other health benefits. One that is growing in popularity for a number of reasons is the raw food diet.

The basic principles of raw food dieting are very simple. Cooking food over flame causes the cell walls of the food to break down, releasing essential nutrients that are lost. It can also add unwanted chemicals to your meal, depending on how you cook. Raw food proponents argue that we were not evolutionarily designed to consume and digest prepared food. Foods in their natural state are better for you, so why cook them?

Of course, this tends to lead to a primarily vegetarian diet, as raw meats can contain a number of harmful bacteria. Instead of cooking foods, some raw food enthusiasts recommend the use of fermentation to render foods like beans more palatable. There are a number of successful raw food cookbooks on the market that offer recipes for everything from burritos to pizza.

It’s easy to understand why the raw food diet is popular – it hearkens back to a time when we lived simpler lives, less cluttered with technology and information. But the jury is still out on whether a completely raw diet can actually deliver the health benefits that devotees claim.

Now more than ever, your social connections mean a lot when it comes to finding employment. In a recession, you need to use as many tools as possible to get a job. Several websites have become popular for people to post their credentials, assemble references, and apply for positions. Two of the most popular are Linkedin.com and Indeed.com.

Linkedin.com works like many other social networking websites – you build a profile and then connect up to other people that you are acquainted with. However, the focus here is on your work experience. In your profile, you list the companies you have worked for and your positions, and this profile is visible to companies you apply with.

Linkedin has become a vital part of modern business, and there's no excuse to not use it. Profiles are free and they provide an excellent way to keep in touch with former employers in case you need them for references.

Indeed.com works in a similar fashion – you can use the site to explore available jobs all over the world, and employers post there regularly. Prospective workers can create a profile with a posted resume, and when employers post a job they can be referred automatically to qualified applicants already in the system.

	Good luck!

The poet Williams Carlos Williams once said “It is difficult to get the news from poems / yet men die miserably everyday for lack of what is found there.” His words point to the power of poetry as a source of sustenance for human beings. Here are five must-know iconic poets whose works are certain to enhance your life:

Robert Frost - If you think you know this poet because of some exposure to him in school, think again: diving into Frost’s body of work will reveal a very different poet from the one so often presented in cursory classroom exercises. His poems, ranging from funny to plaintive to dark, will excite your ear and energize your heart and mind.

Elizabeth Bishop – This is a poet whose impeccable eye for detail will astound you in poem after poem. She holds a vivid lens to the world and records it precisely as it is, continually testing the bounds between perception and truth.

Richard Wilbur – One of the greatest living poets, Wilbur writes poems that will captivate you with their sounds while they challenge you with their content. His poems beg to be read aloud and memorized.

Sylvia Plath – Though the biographical details of her life sometimes overshadow Plath’s poetry, her work remains some of the most electrically charged and influential poetry of the 20th century. The poems burn on the page, flashing with a skillfully controlled energy force.

Philip Larkin - Considered one of the best English poets of the twentieth century, Larkin is poet whose works will dazzle you with their wry intelligence and sonic power. His poems, known for their often less-than-sunny world-view, never present one version of reality but instead acknowledge the complexity of experience.

The fall months are harvest time, both for sturdy winter squashes and root vegetables, and for traditional spring crops that can be replanted as the weather cools. Enjoy the last hurrah of the planting season with these fall favorites.

Pumpkin – The quintessential fall vegetable, pumpkin can be used in a traditional pie, pumpkin bread or roll. Or try it in a Thai-style curry!

Delicata Squash – Delicata squash does not keep well, so enjoy this seasonal treat while you can! Try it in a creamy soup or roasted with butter, lime juice, and a hint of cayenne.

Cabbage – Another traditional vegetable to “put up” for winter, cabbage is surprisingly versatile in slaws of all stripes, slow cooked for hours with beer, apples, and kielbasa, or stir-fried with Indian seasonings.

Parsnips – Parsnips have a smooth sweetness that tastes like nothing else. Ramp up the sweetness by roasting parsnips with a drizzle of oil or boil and mash with butter and cream for a perfect complement to roasted chicken.

Peas – Once you’ve had in-season peas, you’ll have a hard time going back to frozen. Fresh peas are so sweet and delicious that all they really need is a quick steaming, some salt and pepper, and maybe a dab of butter for a fabulous side dish. Or try fresh pea puree soup with mint and lemon.

Sometimes going to the gym can get a little boring. How many spinning classes can you really take before you start to burn out? Thankfully, instructors are developing all kinds of cool new programs that will get your body toned and healthy while also engaging your mind. Here are some of the most interesting new trends on the exercise scene.

Aerial Yoga – Yoga has been one of the fastest-growing fitness concepts for the last decade, and people are starting to branch out and combine the traditional poses with new experiences. Aerial yoga uses a ceiling-mounted loop of heavy-duty fabric to expand the repertoire, adding new resistance moves and ways to extend stretches.

Zumba – This aerobic dance program is sweeping the nation, and for good reason. It’s a pile of fun for all ages. Using Latin American rhythms and fast footwork, it burns calories like crazy and helps tone the entire body. Zumba also requires no special equipment to learn, and certified instructors are springing up everywhere.

Circus Schools – One popular exercise trend is circus performing. No, you won’t be putting on clown makeup, but rather learning some of the unique physical and gymnastic disciplines that acrobats and other performers use in their acts. Using a combination of stretching, balance, and strength exercises, you can swing on the trapeze, walk the tightrope and many other fun and challenging activities.

CrossFit – This intense strength training and conditioning program has taken off in recent years. It combines activities across ten essential physical disciplines to create a balanced body, and regulars boast of impressive results. This isn’t one for beginners, though, as sessions can become very intense.
