Valentine’s Day is right around the corner; keep things fresh for your partner with these innovative ideas for Valentine’s surprises.

Come up with some clues and lead your partner on a scavenger hunt around your home or around town. Leave smaller gifts, like notes professing your love, candy, or small trinkets, with some of the clues and save the main gift for the end.

Skip the umpteenth bracelet or box of candy and instead give your beloved an experience. Go skydiving, take a weekend away, or simply give them a day where you take care of everything and they can do whatever they like.

Get a local hotel room and take a trip to your own town. Eat out, visit local tourist attractions, and go shopping.

Design a getaway just for your partner, but don’t let on where you are going or what you are doing til you get there.

Try havng a date at home on Valentine’s Day and going out the night before or after. Restaurants are hectic and the servers are stressed on February 14. You may have a better experience if you stay in for a romantic dinner and movie on that day.

Barbecue is sweeping the nation as one of the hottest new food trends, and lovers of slow-cooked meat have plenty of options. In Harrisburg, one of the best options is the Little Black Truck. The Little Black Truck's a roving smokehouse that serves up spectacular meat cooked to incredible tenderness. The pulled pork here is excellent: every bite is permeated with the most wonderful smoky flavor, which reacts amazingly to the sweet and tangy barbecue sauce. The portions are huge — a single sandwich is more than enough to fill you up. If you don’t feel like barbecue, The Little Black Truck also offers extremely good burgers, topped with gooey melted cheese and a delicious horseradish sauce. The homemade chili is also a high point, perfectly spicy and laden with delicious meat. Don’t come here expecting a salad, but if you’re in the mood for some epic meats, the Little Black Truck certainly won’t disappoint.

If you’re looking for a more irreverent take on the stage, Harrisburg’s Popcorn Hat Players might whet your appetite. This much-loved local children’s theatre troupe has been putting on shows since 1993, using professional actors and directors to bring top-quality performances to children of all social and economic backgrounds. Plays put on by the troupe include adaptations of classic Mother Goose rhymes as well as fairy tales like The Little Mermaid and Rumpelstiltskin. Their performances are very entertaining. Although the stagecraft is serious business, each show has a real sense of humor that will keep kids riveted to the stage. And, of course, the Popcorn Hat Players throw in a few jokes for the grown-ups as well. Ticket prices are incredibly reasonable – just seven dollars – which makes it an excellent entertainment value. The troupe also runs a number of educational and outreach programs and mentors a group of young actors who perform in a yearly show.
